What is the main activity of the course? 
Sculling in singles as we think this is the best, and quickest, way to learn to scull. See the Alec Hodges Sculling Courses page for more information.

Do you offer accommodation? 
No.  A useful accommodation website is  The nearest campsite is Chertsey Camping and Caravanning Club: 01932 562405.

How long is the course? 
The course runs from Monday to Friday, from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, apart from Friday when it will finish at around 2 p.m.

What happens if I fall in the Thames? 
The tideway is a dangerous place and needs to be treated with respect.  Life jackets are not provided for scullers taking part in the course, but there be safety cover in the form of coaches and safety launches. There are a few simple rules that you need to know if you fall in (as most beginners do), and  your coach will go over these  prior to going on the water. It is sensible to wash your hands after an outing and before eating.

How much does it cost?
The course fee is £389.  The fee includes introductory membership of Tideway Scullers School and insurance for the use of club equipment. No refunds will be given for failure to attend any sessions.

How do I pay?  
By internet transfer - our bank details are on the application form.  

Do you provide lunch? 
Yes, a cooked lunch is provided, including a vegetarian option.  Please let us know of any dietary requirements in advance. 

What do I need to bring?

  • Close-fitting clothes, preferably lycra
  • T-shirts and a warm top such as a fleece
  • Wellies. It's a good idea to have wellies a size larger, so they are easier to take off while in a boat. Make sure they are named!
  • A change of clothing in case you fall in
  • Sun cream

Is there somewhere I can leave valuables? 
Yes, there will be a container in which you can keep small items during the course, but it is advisable not to bring anything of value to the club.

Can I bring my own boat? 
Yes, please do if you have one, but we will only be able to rack it outside.

How do I get to Tideway Scullers School? 
TSS is right next to Chiswick Bridge, on the north bank of the Thames. We have a bike cage – please ask for the lock code. There is car parking, but there have been security issues with cars left by the club; it is often better to use nearby Hartington Lane. The nearest train station is Mortlake, which is about a fifteen-minute walk and is on the main line from Waterloo. The 190 bus, which runs from Richmond to Hammersmith and beyond, stops near the club on the A316.
