Scope and aims
The Veteran Men's Squad has become one of the most successful in the country in part due to its friendly and relaxed persona underpinned by a strong and well structured training ethic. We look to encompass all oarsmen from Veteran A upward both of sweep oar and sculling disciplines. The Squad is always keen to take on new members and we especially encourage those who wish to make a return to rowing after some time out of the sport.
The group has a rich tapestry of experience and character which has led to trophies, pennants and medals being won at all the major national and international events that it has entered in recent years. Our aim is to continue and improve upon these performances at all age groups whilst enjoying the benefits of our increasing years.
Racing
The squad has a focus on the Veteran IVs Head and the Vesta Veteran Head during the winter season and the Veteran Nat Champs and Veteran's Henley in the regatta season, culminating in either the European or World Masters depending on the geographical location of those championships in any given year. We also enter other notable head races and regattas with veteran categories on the upper and lower Thames. As a squad we race in all possible boat categories (1x, 2x, 2-, 4x, 4+, 4-, 8) in any age group.
Training
Generally the squad meets each weekend at 7.30am on both days, but there are no hard and fast rules. Meeting at a given time helps us to formulate crews, if necessary, and allows crews to boat and train together on the tideway. It is not unusual for a settled crew to train at another time by mutual agreement as, sometimes, members have other commitments.
Many of the squad land train away from the club during the week so there is usually an ergometer programme running that applies to the time of year and the events that we are leading up to. The club also has a fully equipped gymnasium.
